File Extension API

File type: Acrobat Plug-in File

About the API file type:

If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .API files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

The use of the API file extension is normally in the context of providing additional product features and support to the Adobe Acrobat software. The API file format is used to represent the Acrobat Plug-in files described as an updater file that is published by Adobe Systems to upgrade the current feature sets of the applications. It should not be mistaken with the default PDF file format used by the application in creating documents. The updater file supports the Adobe Acrobat family of computer applications intended for viewing, creating, manipulating and managing of files that use the PDF (Portable Document Format) developed by Adobe. This software features a fixed layout similar to that implemented by paper publications. The API file extension supported application became the industry de facto standard by 1990 with majority of its competitors slowly becoming distant memories. However, due to the popular usage of the format, newer competitors came into the industry both under the commercial and free application distribution categories.

This new version supported by the API file extension also features an improved Web capture facility for capturing the entire contents of the Web page which can be integrated into a PDF file and shared with other users. A user has the option of personalizing a PDF portfolio with the use of customizable templates for branding and navigation including the insertion of H.264 of Flash (FLV) format videos which can be played back directly from within the Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader applications. The application also supports video format conversion including creation of PDF based maps which can be imported into geospatial files to retain coordinates as well as metadata.
