About the AOS file type:
If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .AOS files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).ARCHOS has been identified to implement four distinct file types in relation to its broad product range. These file types are AAZ, HDUPD, LOS, and AOS which is described as a signed encrypted data container used for firmware updates. The AOS file extension is closely associated with the Gmini camcorder product line of ARCHOS. The structure of this type of file involves the usage of data chunks. This format file uses RIFF chunk as its container unit along with SWID chunk for its software identifier and HWID chunk as hardware identifier. It also uses CCOD/CODE chunk which consists of compressed images ciphered with a 32 byte XOR encryption key used in relation with a SIGN chunk. Public keys used by the application can be retrieved from the memory of the Gmini device. Upon execution of the SIGN chunk, the HD serial number of the firmware is verified and compared between the deciphered HD SN and the HD SN found in the Gmini device. This type of licensing system is believed to be designed to accommodate the distribution of plug-ins for its customers.

Basically, a firmware is synonymous to a system software or an operating software for a hardware device. When updating a Gmini device, the AOS file extension is initially downloaded into a computer system from authorized host systems on the Internet. Once the download of the file format AOS is completed, the ARCHOS device must be turned on and connected to the computer system using a USB cable link. The user must make sure that there is ample power in the device to complete the process; otherwise, the firmware may become corrupt. Since the ARCHOS manufactured devices support UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) functionality, the connection will be automatically detected by the Operating System in just a few seconds. Normally, it would reflect as either a hard drive or a device. This allows the user to open the storage area of the device similar to accessing a local hard drive or folder. The file extension AOS must be copied to the ARCHOS device under the first DATA folder of the portable device. Upon completion of the copy process, the device can be disconnected from the computer system and connected to a wall charger. Once the ARCHOS device is plugged into an AC socket, the user can proceed with the update process by clicking on the Update Firmware command which can be seen under the main menu of the device.
