The ALZ file extension is a proprietary file format generated by the archive and compression tool ALZip. This utility is developed by ESTsoft for exclusive deployment under the Microsoft Windows Operating System platform. The ALZ file extension extends support to 36 different archive and compression formats which also include the popular ZIP file type. This format file made its debut in the market in 1999 born out of the frustration of a South Korean employee for the English language interface of the widely used WinZip compression software. The Korean interface presented by the ALZip utility became very successful and well received in the IT industry. The following year, it was distributed as a freeware in various host websites. By December of 2001, it achieved the status of becoming the most popular compression tool in the Korean computer market. This status is attributed for the immense popularity of the ALZ file extension in the Asian region and the applications continued domination of the local compression utility market of South Korea by 2004. The quality of the ALZip tool is enforced by its gaining 70% of the market share including receiving the Digital Innovation Awards for the Top 100 Companies operating in South Korea.

The introduction of the ALZ file extension format was originally meant to deal with limitations in file sizes provided by the ZIP compression tool. In theory the ALZ file extension has no upper limit for virtually any file size and type. The design of the application allows the Operating System to dictate the file size limitations that can be handled by the utility based on the storage space availability in the host system. With its initial success in the computer market, there were more consumer demands for further improvements of the software's feature sets. By October 2001, the ALZip compression utility was converted from pure freeware application to free for home use software. The usage for government agencies requires a licensed version of the application. In April 2002, the commercial usage license was added to the application with the licensing requirement being implemented purely on an honor system. The application, unlike other tools in its category has no nag screens which means that even unlicensed copies of the application can look like it is registered. With the release of the ALZip 7, the license became adware allowing the display of banner ads when the application is active.
