The BES application supporting the ALX file extension can achieve connection to messaging applications like Novell GroupWise, Lotus Domino, and Microsoft Exchange among others. To initiate the application loading process, the intended file to be installed must first be downloaded (if necessary) and saved in the computer system. The application to be installed usually comes with various component files with the two most important elements being the COD format and the ALX file extension. By using the Desktop Manager application, the user can choose the Add/Remove Applications options (the handheld device must be turned on with a connected status) and proceed to click on the Start button. After establishing the device configuration, the application will list all software application currently stored in the BlackBerry. The user must specify the ALX format file to be opened in order to begin the installation process to allow the Desktop Manager to identify the type and name of the application to be installed. Upon completion of the installation process, the message Update Complete: The Loading Operation Was Successful will be displayed to the user.
