The Sega Dreamcast video game console uses the default AFS file format for its Compressed Audio. This gaming console was introduced into the market as the successor of the Sega Saturn and represented Sega's attempt to recapture the console market by introducing next generation systems. In computing, audio compression represented by the AFS file extension is intended to reduce the actual file size of audio data by applying algorithms implemented by computer applications referred to as codecs. The AFS file extension is designed for real time execution using lossy algorithm for better compression ratio making it the preferred format in consumer electronics like the Sega Dreamcast. Similar with image compression, the information redundancy is reduced by using various linear prediction, pattern recognition, and coding procedures that would limit the amount of data used in describing the information without sacrificing its playback quality.

The Dreamcast Console supported by the AFS file extension features a 64-bit processor from Hitachi (SH-4) with a clock speed of 200MHz capable of interpreting 360 Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS). This console has an inherent bus speed of 800Mb per second with a cache size of 8K for instruction and 16K for data. The interlaced graphics resolution of 320 by 240 or 640 by 480 pixels is provided by the 128-bit 100MHz PowerVR 2DC graphics engine. Its geometry engine is capable of supporting Alpha blending, perspective correction, Gouraud shading, Anistropic, bilinear and trilinear mip mapping, and Z-buffer that maximizes the capacity of its 8Mb video RAM. The playback of the AFS file extension format is supported by the 45MHz Yamaha Super Intelligent sound processor that allows for a 64-channel sound reproduction at a sampling rate of 44.1KHz. The audio file is capable of handling surround sound, delay, and reverb sound effects with additional power delivered by its 2Mb RAM memory for its sound feature. The AFS file extension is explicitly hosted by the Windows Operating System environment.
