File Extension ACM

File type: Microsoft Audio Compression Manager Driver

About the ACM file type:

If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .ACM files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

The ACM file extension is used by the Audio Compression Manager Driver which is exclusively deployed under the Microsoft Windows Operating System platform. This format supports the Windows multimedia framework responsible for the management of audio codecs required by different Operating System events and installed applications. It can also be considered as part of an API specification which defines the specifications required by applications to work with the multimedia functionality of Windows. The ACM format file and its corresponding technology are considered as the precursor of the DirectShow technology of Microsoft which also served as the foundation for its current DirectX multimedia framework. The DirectShow process however does not provide file encoding support for end users but rather delivers solution for developers in creating end-to-end encoding of graph contents. The ACM file extension has no inherent support for the VBR audio stream which means that newer audio formats such as FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, and MPEG-4 AAC among others remain incompatible with this audio format. There are some work around provided by third party software like in the case of Ogg Vorbis which achieves compatibility with the ACM file extension when embedded within an RIFF file like AVI or WAV format as long as it uses constant bitrate.

The Audio Compression Manager Catalog is another software which provides additional support to the file extension ACM based on the Operating System design. This application utilizes the on hand driver interface hooks for overriding the currently used mapping algorithms of the waveform audio equipment. In this context, the device open calls are intercepted by the algorithm which makes it possible to implement different tasks for processing the audio data like insertion of external codec sequences. This software can affect format converter, codec, and filter drivers. The ACM file extension supports the changing of audio data from one kind to another format by converting the structure but not the type of data via format converters. In using filters, the data format is not modified. One ACM driver can support the combination of type changes implemented by this method. The ACM file extension supports the passing of buffered data to the converter in order to decompress the data and deliver it to the shadow buffer.
