This format file is based on an open-source code that is supported and developed by the AbiSource community with support for footnotes, lists, tables, images, advanced layout feature, and rich formatting of text. The application responsible for the creation of the ABW format file exhibits similar functionality to the popular Microsoft Word and can also be deployed in a wide array of word processing tasks but without the hefty purchase price. The document file generated by this program allows for the implementation of straightforward word processing tasks with a simple interface that virtually eliminates multi-level and ribbons of menu options. The interface features simple icons with menus plastered across the top of the user's page eliminating unnecessary displays on the screen. Aside from basic word processing features, it also incorporates mail merge, page numbering, automatic text, and date and time insertion features that are fully supported by the ABW file extension.

The AbiWord application associated to the ABW format file began as a part of a larger Open-Source project known as the AbiSource which was initiated by SourceGear Corporation. The initial intent of the project was to deliver an Open-Source, cross-platform office suite to cater to the basic requirements in word processing, presesntation, and spread sheet. The initial product of the project was the AbiWord word processor. With the release of its programming code, a developer community related to the project was quickly formed which allowed for the continued development of the project which has since been terminated by SouceGear. With increased quality and improvements, a better versoin of the AbiWord application was introduced into the IT industry in April 2002 with subsequent upgrades in September 2003, December 2004, and September 2005. Throughout these improvements and upgrades, the application has maintained its adherence to its default ABW file extension default.
